Keahu Kahuanui is the Hawaiian hunk who can currently be seen starring as Danny Mahealani on MTV’s hit show, Teen Wolf. He can also be seen on Hawaii Five-O, and The Secret Life of the American Teenager. His talents and interests are so vast and refreshing. He often geeks out over sci-fi and shows support for the genre, NASA and science in his pursuits. He even appeared on Cocktails to discuss his love of all things nerdy and comics with the legendary Stan Lee.

I recently spoke with Keahu about his acting and other interests.

Please describe what Teen Wolf is about for those who may not be familiar with the show.

A departure from the movie with Michael J. Fox, Teen Wolf tells the story of how a group of angsty teens deal with werewolves, their supernatural kin and the world of trouble that comes with it, all while trying to still live their lives. It’s a dark twist on a classic movie theme mixed with love, sarcasm and a lot of shirtlessness.

Who is Danny on Teen Wolf?

He’s the best friend, moral compass to the school bully; lacrosse team goalie; boyfriend-seeking, party thrower who works out too much, can’t stay out of trouble but, so far, is a likeable fellow misfit at Beacon Hills High.

Who is Cal Litoa on Hawaii Five-0?

A stalking, jealous boyfriend, suspected of murdering his girlfriend /coworker when she turns up dead on the North Shore.

Are there any similarities with your characters?

We’re all Hawaiian but I don’t play lacrosse and I’d like to think I’d be a better boyfriend than Cal Litoa was.

You have a beautiful name. What does your name mean?

Thank you! I have my family to thank also. I recently got clarification on the meaning: “Place where the fire gathers.”

Tell me about you as a photographer

I started taking pictures when I was around 10 so I have been inadvertently been training my eye for it for years. Traveling gave me a ton of practice as well and the ability, once you learn to properly manipulate and capture light and freeze any moment in time for safe keeping, has always fascinated me. It started as an escape; getting to look back to happier times when I was feeling down. Now, photography helps me pause, focus and appreciate the different ways the world around me is perceived.

Do you do your own stunts?

Unfortunately, it can be risky for actors to do too many because if they get seriously injured, production has to stop. I do what I’m allowed but I gladly let the professional – and often incredibly talented – stunt team to do their jobs. Even with all their training, they still get hurt.

How did you become a sci-fi geek?

It’s true, the Force has been strong with me since I was a kid. I was a bit of an introvert growing up and I tended to do better in math and science at school so I went with it. Because some of my at home life was rough and lonely, I often looked to escape into my imagination. Science fiction provided a deep well to pull from and was something easily accessible to me.

What was it like to work with Stan Lee?

Great words don’t do the man justice. He has a very positive energy, works harder than anyone I know and still has time to appreciate his fans. I’m happy to have met Stan especially in such an epic period for his creations.

Danny doesn’t really appear in the promo for the episode, though you can still watch it here, if you want.

MTV’s Teen Wolf, currently in the second half of its third season (3B), is a powerhouse in the pop culture world right now as it is dominating social media sites and captivating the hearts of its many enthusiastic viewers.

Since returning in early January, Teen Wolf has been treating its viewers to a whirlwind of terror, suspense, humor, and romance, continuing its tradition of upping the stakes even more with each passing season. Scott, Stiles, Allison, and the rest of the Beacon Hills gang have been dealing with not only their own emotional demons, but some very real demons as well, and the most recent episode left off with a nail-biting cliffhanger where it was revealed that Stiles was being possessed by a very powerful one.

Keahu Kahuanui, the 27-year-old actor who gives life to fan favorite Danny Mahealani, was nice enough to chat with Emertainment Monthly about his character and what fans can look forward to in the remaining seven episodes of the season. Danny may have been absent for the first couple of episodes, but since his return in “Galvanize” he’s been present on screen more and more, hopefully an indication of an increased amount of Danny scenes in the second half of 3B.

Can’t get enough of MTV’s Teen Wolf? Neither can we.

TV Equals got a chance to talk to Keahu Kahuanui who plays Danny Mahealani on the show and ask him some of our burning questions about what is coming up.

During our talk, Kahuanui teased what we can expect for Danny the rest of the season and possible secrets we still have to uncover about him, his future projects, his love for Game of Thrones and more.

What can you tease about what’s coming up for Danny in the rest of the season?

Keahu Kahuanui: One hint is that there may be a spark between him and Ethan. Obviously he did his best effort to help him throw that party. So I would say that might win him a few points.

Danny has been around a lot of weird stuff? How much do you think he knows or suspects, or is he completely oblivious to everything happening around him?

Keahu: I mean, if it were me, personally, I think I’d be a little freaked at all the stuff that goes on around me, or at least I’d be a little bit more curious. But also, Danny has been in Beacon Hills for quite a while, obviously, and so have the rest of the kids. So even though some of the stuff has happened, there’s a history of it in Beacon Hills and I think maybe it’s just become so commonplace that that’s why it’s something he maybe doesn’t think two or three times about as he should. I can think of other supernatural towns where things aren’t quite right, but yet some people don’t tend to ask very many questions.

Would you want him to find out about some of the supernatural things going on?

Keahu: I’d say I don’t know. I’m not sure. I’m too afraid of the implications of that.

Is there something that no one knows about Danny yet that you can tell us, or just any random fact that you haven’t been asked about before?

Keahu: There’s definitely more to Danny I think we still haven’t gotten into. He’s been in more episodes as of each season, but I feel there’s some depth to him and things we could uncover. His last name also, Mahealani, which means night of the full or night of the heavenly moon, is something that has also yet to be explained. So who knows? I honestly don’t know.

If you could talk to Danny, what would you say to him?

Keahu: Run!

What’s been the most surprising part of being on ‘Teen Wolf’ so far?

Keahu: That I haven’t passed out from all the workouts that I’ve had to do in order to be in shape.

Is there a moment that stands out for you during your time on the show?

Keahu: Not in particular. I mean, I feel just going to work everyday and being able to work on the set that I do is something that stands out. I’ve worked on a few other sets and as great as they’ve been, I still don’t know…as actors, we are fortunate to be able to work on sets like the ones that work as well as ‘Teen Wolf.’

I read that you were a fan of board games. Do you think they could integrate that into his character on the show?

Keahu: Like he’s a pro Dungeons and Dragons player? I don’t know, maybe. It would be fun.

Do you have any other projects that you’re working on right now?

Keahu: Nothing that I can speak to now, but definitely a few projects. Let’s just say that I keep very, very busy. My free time is almost non-existent.

So exciting stuff to look forward to then?

Keahu: Absolutely.

If you could guest star on any show, which one would it be?

Keahu: I’m a huge fan of ‘Game of Thrones,’ and between the…I guess it’s not necessarily a period piece, but where it takes place and the medieval nature of it as well as having a little bit of magic, not to mention just the types of actors and characters that you get to interact with, that would be a dream job.

Let’s make it happen. What role can we give you?

Keahu: I’ve read all of the books. Let’s just say that there are a few roles that have yet to come up that I could possibly fill.

Do you want to give names just to put it out there?

Keahu: I don’t want to jinx it. But yes, if there’s ever a show on TV, ‘Game of Thrones’ would be it.
